New Orleans
In short
Black Sabbath filtered through hardcore and a production that sounds like a damp room.
The scene
At the end of the 1980s Eyehategod combined Sabbath riffs with hardcore's aggression and recorded them badly on purpose, and the humidity of the city became part of the genre's mythology whether the bands wanted it or not. The Melvins, up in Washington state, had independently reached something similar — proof that the sound was an idea rather than a climate.
