In short

Thick down-tuned riffs, groovy drums and a fuzz tone. Born at generator parties in the desert.

How it sounds

  • Down-tuned guitars with thick, warm fuzz rather than sharp distortion.
  • Mid-tempo groove with drums that sway instead of hitting.
  • Analogue production, usually with vintage amps and no drum triggers.

The specifics

Tempo
90-130 bpm
Song length
4-7 min
Tuning
C or D standard through fuzz pedals into valve amplifiers, with the guitars deliberately warm and slightly loose rather than tight.
Production
Analogue and roomy, recorded to sound like a band playing in a large space at high volume. Almost no digital editing, and the imprecision is left in.
Written about
The desert, Drugs, cheerfully, The road, Science fiction

What each part is doing

  • Guitar Sabbath riffs with the swing put back, played through fuzz rather than modern distortion. Kyuss famously recorded through a bass amp, which is why the guitars have no top end and enormous body.
  • Bass Fuzzed and loud, often playing something independent rather than doubling — the groove depends on the bass and drums moving together against the guitar.
  • Drums Loose, behind the beat and swinging, which is exactly what separates this from doom's rigidity and from metal generally.
  • Vocals Sung cleanly and often with a lot of reverb, sitting inside the band rather than in front of it.

What it isn't

That it is a drug genre. The name comes from the subject matter of a handful of records and stuck to a much wider set of bands, most of whom are doing something specific and musical: reviving the pre-metal riff — Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Budgie — at a moment when metal had abandoned swing entirely. What holds the genre together is the return of groove to heavy music, which is a formal proposition rather than a lifestyle one.

Told apart from

  • Doom metal Doom is bleak, slow and mournful. Stoner rock is warm, mid-tempo and grooves — the same tuning and fuzz put to the opposite emotional use.
  • Hard rock Stoner rock is hard rock's riff vocabulary arriving twenty years later, down-tuned and fuzzier, by way of doom.
  • Stoner doom Stoner doom halves the tempo and removes the groove, replacing the boogie with a trance.
  • Desert rock Desert rock is the Palm Desert scene specifically — the generator parties that produced Kyuss — and is stoner rock's founding regional wing.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

In the desert near Palm Springs, at 1990s generator parties, Kyuss ran their guitar through a bass amp to get a thicker tone. Josh Homme carried the formula into Queens of the Stone Age. It is the most direct descendant of Black Sabbath that never considered itself metal.
