Sung. Melodic singing throughout.

In short

Bach and Paganini transposed onto a distorted guitar: harmonic minor scales, sweep arpeggios and three-minute solos.

How it sounds

  • Harmonic minor and Phrygian dominant scales with diminished arpeggios.
  • Sweep picking and legato technique at extreme speed.
  • Structures borrowed from the baroque concerto: theme, variation, cadenza.

The specifics

Tempo
140-200 bpm
Song length
4-7 min
Tuning
E standard or a semitone down, on a scalloped fingerboard — the wood between the frets carved away so the fingers touch only string, which makes wide vibrato and fast bending easier.
Production
Guitar-first to the point of imbalance: the lead is mixed far in front, the rhythm section is a platform, and the reverb is long enough to make a solo sound like a recital.
Written about
Fantasy and the baroque, Virtuosity itself, Fire, ice and other elemental abstractions

What each part is doing

  • Guitar Harmonic minor and diminished scales rather than the blues pentatonic — which is what makes the genre sound European — executed with sweep picking and rapid legato. Bach and Paganini transcribed onto an instrument they never imagined.
  • Keyboards Trading unison runs with the guitar, note for note, at speed. The duel is a structural device rather than a showpiece.
  • Bass Rarely doing anything independent. In this genre the bass exists to keep the harmony legible under a very busy lead.
  • Drums Fast, clean and deliberately unobtrusive, with double kick for drive. Any rhythmic interest would compete with the thing the record is about.
  • Vocals Present but subordinate — a traditional metal singer employed on what is essentially an instrumental genre.

What it isn't

That it invented the idea of classical influence in metal. Ritchie Blackmore was quoting Bach in Deep Purple a decade earlier, and Uli Jon Roth before Malmsteen. What was new in 1984 was making it the entire proposition — an instrumental-first record where the songs exist to frame the playing — and that decision is why the genre burned bright, spawned a hundred imitators and then became a technique other genres absorbed rather than a scene that lasted.

Told apart from

  • Power metal Power metal took this technique and put songs around it. Neoclassical metal is the technique as the subject.
  • Progressive metal Prog metal's virtuosity serves a composition; neoclassical virtuosity is the composition, and the forms underneath are frequently very simple.
  • Speed metal Same tempos, entirely different scale vocabulary — speed metal is still built on blues and chromatics, this on harmonic minor.
  • Technical thrash Technical thrash is as demanding and aimed at dissonance and metre rather than at melody and classical form.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

Yngwie Malmsteen heard Paganini and Bach at seven, saw Hendrix burn a guitar on television, and decided to combine them. His 1984 debut raised the technical bar for rock guitar overnight. The genre produced a whole generation of virtuosos and an inevitable backlash against virtuosity.
