Sung. Melodic singing throughout.

In short

Recorded on a four-track cassette with the hiss left in deliberately. Indifference as a method.

How it sounds

  • Recorded on a four-track with tape hiss and saturation left in.
  • Approximate tuning and mistakes kept in the final version.
  • Short songs, sometimes under two minutes, with incomplete structures.

The specifics

Tempo
90-140 bpm
Song length
1.5-3 min
Tuning
Standard, often badly, on guitars that drift out of tune during the take and are left that way.
Production
Four-track cassette, hiss included, with hum, tape saturation and false starts kept in. The medium is audible on every record and that is the entire proposition.
Written about
Boredom, Ambivalence, Domestic detail, Songwriting itself, obliquely

What each part is doing

  • Guitar Loose and untidy, with the tuning drifting and the mistakes retained. The songs are frequently very good and the performances deliberately are not.
  • Bass Simple and often absent, because a four-track has four tracks and something had to go.
  • Drums A cheap kit, a drum machine, or somebody hitting things nearby. Fidelity is not the value being maximised.
  • Vocals Recorded on a built-in microphone, distorting, and mixed wherever they landed. Daniel Johnston's records are the extreme case and the genre's moral centre.
  • The tape An instrument in its own right: hiss, wow and saturation are audible on every record, and re-recording these songs cleanly demonstrably damages them.

What it isn't

That the fidelity is the point. The fidelity is the frame: Guided by Voices wrote hundreds of extremely well-made pop songs and recorded them on a boombox, and the tension between the quality of the writing and the state of the recording is what the records are about. Bands who imitate the hiss without the songwriting have copied the wrong half.

Told apart from

  • Indie rock Lo-fi is indie's home-recording wing, where the constraint became the aesthetic rather than a stage on the way to a studio.
  • Indie pop / twee Both value amateurism. Indie pop is sweet and arranged; lo-fi is ragged and frequently unfinished by design.
  • Noise rock Both distrust polish. Noise rock is loud and deliberate about its abrasion; lo-fi is quiet and deliberate about its scruffiness.
  • Garage rock Garage sounded like this because of what studios cost in 1965. Lo-fi sounds like this on purpose thirty years later, which is a different act.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

Guided by Voices released dozens of albums recorded in garages and basements, with hundreds of unfinished songs. Sebadoh and Pavement turned amateurism into a stance against late-1980s production values. The sound became so desirable that there are now plugins that simulate it.
