Shouted. Barked or chanted, and you can still make out the words.

In short

The exact point where hardcore and thrash metal merge: metal riffs, skate-park attitude, mandatory circle pit.

How it sounds

  • Thrash metal riffing inside hardcore structures and song lengths.
  • Fast tempos with transitions into syncopated mosh parts.
  • Lyrics that are often satirical or about the scene itself.

The specifics

Tempo
180-240 bpm
Song length
1-2.5 min
Tuning
E standard, on hardcore instruments played by people who had learned thrash riffs. Tuning is ordinary and the riffs are not.
Production
Fast, cheap and dry, made on punk budgets by bands who were listening to metal records. The production is hardcore's; the guitars are not.
Written about
Beer, Skateboarding, Anti-authority, Deliberate stupidity as a style

What each part is doing

  • Guitar Palm-muted thrash riffing at hardcore's tempo and hardcore's song length. The riffs are metal and the arrangement is punk, which is the whole genre in one sentence.
  • Bass Following the guitar with a pick, loud, and rarely doing anything else.
  • Drums Fast punk beats with thrash's skank and the occasional double-kick fill — the drummer is the clearest evidence of where the band came from.
  • Vocals Shouted in hardcore's register rather than metal's, with gang choruses. Nobody in crossover growls.

What it isn't

That crossover is a lesser thrash. It is a genuine two-way exchange and the traffic went both directions: thrash bands got faster and shorter from hearing hardcore, and hardcore bands got riffs. Anthrax and S.O.D. shared members deliberately to make that point, and the entire metalcore branch of this tree exists because this exchange happened.

Told apart from

  • Thrash metal Crossover is hardcore played by people who learned thrash riffs. The tell is length — crossover is usually done inside two minutes and thrash takes five.
  • Hardcore punk Hardcore with metal riffs in it. If there are palm-muted metal riffs under the shouting, it has crossed over.
  • Bay Area thrash The two scenes shared bills and audiences in California. Bay Area thrash got longer and more technical; crossover deliberately did not.
  • Beatdown / metallic hardcore Beatdown is the later, slower, heavier hardcore-metal hybrid built around the breakdown rather than around thrash's speed.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

By the mid-1980s the skate audience listened to both Metallica and Black Flag, so bands started playing both at once. D.R.I. named the phenomenon outright with the 1987 album Crossover. Municipal Waste revived the formula in the 2000s and built a career on parties and circle pits.
