In short

European post-punk on cheap drum machines: cold synths, distant vocals, the atmosphere of a grey housing block in winter.

How it sounds

  • A cheap drum machine — Roland TR-606, Korg — and a monophonic synthesizer.
  • Chorused guitar, used sparingly and for texture.
  • Distant vocals, often in French, over lo-fi production.

The specifics

Tempo
90-130 bpm
Song length
3-5 min
Tuning
Standard, with the guitar frequently absent altogether. The genre's identity is in cheap analogue synthesisers and drum machines rather than in strings.
Production
Thin, cold and small, recorded at home on four-track by people who could not afford a studio. The limitation became the aesthetic and then became the point.
Written about
Isolation, European cities, Detachment, Romance, at a distance

What each part is doing

  • Synthesiser Monophonic and cheap, playing one line at a time, with the limitations audible — this music is inseparable from the instruments' price in 1982.
  • Drum machine Preset patterns, unhidden and unvaried, providing a mechanical pulse that the human vocal sits uneasily on top of.
  • Bass Where present, played high and melodic in the post-punk manner, frequently the only organic sound on the record.
  • Vocals Sung flatly and often in French, low in the register, with the affectlessness deliberate rather than a lack of ability.

What it isn't

That it is French goth. The scenes overlap and the word covers a Belgian and French tradition with its own lineage, its own labels and a much stronger debt to minimal electronics than to Bauhaus. The English-language habit of filing it under goth is a distribution accident, and the records sound closer to early Human League than to the Sisters of Mercy.

Told apart from

  • Post-punk Coldwave is post-punk's continental synth wing, and it keeps the bass-forward arrangement while dropping the guitar.
  • Gothic rock Both are dark, both use drum machines. Goth is theatrical and guitar-led; coldwave is minimal, electronic and much less interested in performance.
  • Industrial rock Industrial rock is aggressive and confrontational with its machines. Coldwave is melancholy and withdrawn with the same equipment.
  • New wave New wave used the same cheap synthesisers to write hits. Coldwave used them to sound like nobody was listening.

The genres this one is most often mistaken for. Written, not derived.

History

In France and Belgium in the early 1980s, young people who could not afford studios recorded post-punk to tape with second-hand synthesizers. The scene was almost forgotten until 2000s 'minimal wave' compilations rediscovered it. Its sound now feeds a large part of dark synth and industrial techno.
